Nothing Happened Today

Questions

Short answers. Anything missing, write to the address at the bottom.

How it works

What is this?
A machine listens to the whole day, in news, trends, the planet, markets, culture, sport, science and technology, and at 19:38:38 UTC turns it into one picture and a short statement. One picture a day, every day.
Who chooses what the picture looks like?
Nobody. The machine reads the day, writes what it felt like, and makes the picture from that, choosing medium, palette and composition itself. No person picks colors or subjects, and no picture is edited after it is made.
Where does the day come from?
From public sources that are read all day: news feeds, search trends, earthquake and weather services, market prices, and more. Every drop page lists what was heard and when, and every number on the page says where it came from.
Why is it called Nothing Happened Today?
Because every day something did. The name is struck through on the sheet and in the header; the picture is the answer to it.
Why 19:38:38 UTC?
One moment a day, the same every day, so a drop day is a full turn of the clock and every picture covers a whole day.
What is a drop?
One day's picture, with its title, its statement and the record of the day it came from. Drops are numbered from 1; the archive has them all.
What if a source is down?
The page says so. A quiet day still makes a real picture; a day on which no source answered makes no picture, and the page says why.
Is there a Spanish version?
Yes: the whole site, including each drop's title and statement, under /es. The link is in the footer.

Prints

What is a timed edition?
Each drop can be ordered on paper for 24 hours from the moment it is published. Copies are numbered in order of payment, across all three formats, and none is made after the window closes. The edition is whatever that day makes; a drop can only ever be printed on its own day.
What are the three formats?
A giclée print on matte fine art paper ($59), a cotton canvas on a deep pine stretcher with white edges ($129), and a giclée print in a black wood frame under perspex, ready to hang ($169). All 16 by 24 inches. Shipping is included.
What exactly is printed?
The sheet as it appears on the site: the picture with its white margin, the site's name struck through, the day and the title. The print file is made from the original at print resolution.
Where does it ship, and how long does it take?
To the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, most of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, from a print lab in or near your country. Usually made and shipped within a week; tracking follows by email.
Can I buy a print of an earlier drop?
No. Once a drop's 24 hours are over, its edition is closed at whatever was made. The shop page keeps the closed editions so you can see what each day made.
What if it arrives damaged?
Write to the address at the bottom, quoting the order number, and it is replaced.
Can I return a print?
Each copy is made to order and numbered, so a change of mind cannot be taken back; a faulty or damaged copy is replaced.

The book

What is the book?
Every month, one hardcover: each day of the month on its sheet, facing the title, the date and the statement written for it, and the days with no picture saying why. $89, shipping included.
When can I order it?
It is pre-ordered while its month runs and made once the month is over and every day is in, then printed to order and shipped. Pre-orders are not open yet; the letter says the day they are.
Is every copy the same?
Yes. The book is made once, after the month closes, so every copy of a month is the same book.

The wallpaper

What is the wallpaper subscription?
A private link that always holds the newest picture at a phone's size, centered on white so the clock sits on paper. Your phone fetches it once a day and sets it as the wallpaper; nothing is installed.
Which phones?
iPhone, with a Shortcuts automation; Android, with Tasker or MacroDroid; and a Mac desktop. The setup page gives the steps for each.
What does it cost, and can I cancel?
$1.99 a month, or $14.99 a year. Billing, switching plan and cancelling are one button on your setup page, through Stripe. Subscriptions are not open yet; the letter says the day they are.

The letter

What do I get?
One email at each drop, at 19:38:38 UTC: the picture, its title and statement, and the edition while it is open. News of the book and the wallpaper when they open. Nothing else.
How do I leave?
Every message ends with a link that removes the address in one click. Your address is cleared from the list at once.

Payment and data

Who takes the payment?
Stripe, on its own page. The site never sees your card. The name, address and email you give are kept only to make and ship the order, are passed to the print lab for that, and are cleared ninety days after it ships.
What does the site know about me?
Almost nothing. No accounts. One cookie, set only when you like a drop, holding a random number. The about page says exactly what is stored.
