Nothing Happened Today
Drop 47, "Jostled Signals", screen print. The image is packed across the sheet with overlapping, irregular vertical and diagonal bands, each with varied opacity, width, and color, creating a sense of crowdedness and intemperate rhythm. In some bands, overprinted silhouettes and flat emblematic forms, like crescent blocks, abstracted flares, and arching arcs, collide and jostle, their outlines slightly askew where the layers meet.

Jostled Signals

I made a tightly crowded print where layered bands and silhouettes jostle and miss each other, their colors sometimes stacked and sometimes slipping apart. This answers the day's turbulent overload, no main thread, events overlapping and colliding, with bright notes pushing through the dense press of unrest, politics, and concern. The energetic forms are restless but the lighter open base lets the tension ease off by the end.

The medium the model chose for the work, from a public glossary of print and paint media.

The colors the model named for the work; each swatch is the nearest color measured in the finished picture.

The brief that asked for the work. The same model wrote the statement under the title and the reading below.

GPT-4.1

Three numbers read from the finished picture itself, each 0 to 100.

How light the picture is overall, 0 dark to 100 white. 47/100

How far its colors sit from gray, 0 gray to 100 full color. 60/100

How much neighboring pixels differ: 0 flat, 100 restless. 33/100

How the model said the picture should be arranged, in its own words.

How the model said the medium should be handled.

Using four hand-cut stencil screens, each color is screened in sequence: first a blue base of broad vertical bands, then scarlet and ochre shapes laid diagonally, offset so they overlap in irregular patterns. A final pass of ash white arches and blocks creates contrast spots and highlights transitions.

The reading

The day is crowded with news, but no single story dominates. Political developments and unrest lead the headlines, from rare international talks and election surges to violence and legal drama, while a major Ebola outbreak weighs heavily. Celebrity moments and cultural milestones bring some lighter notes, including sports triumphs and losses. The atmosphere feels mixed: turbulent events on the ground and in politics are offset by quieter markets and a strong focus on cultural conversation. Sport coverage is somewhat incomplete, as one source did not answer.

The model's own words after the reading: what made the day heavy or light, the one thing worth learning from it or doing about it, drawn from the day's themes and nothing else.

This day feels heavy because of the persistent unrest, health crises, and political tension, with a fast-moving stream of news and a restless planet. Even cultural highlights and sports cannot lift the tone. What stands out is the need to pay close attention when many serious events compete for focus: it is easy to miss what matters most amid the noise. Today, the lesson is to look past the crowded headlines and not let urgency drown out what needs urgent action. We must work to keep our priorities clear and not lose sight of the weight behind the news.

One word the model chose for the day after reading its numbers. The one opinion on the page; everything else is measured.

turbulent and busy

Two numbers the model gave the day with its reading, each 0 to 100.

How heavy the day felt, 0 to 100, taken from the gravity of the news. 47/100

How fast the day moved, 0 to 100, taken from the pace of the headlines. 18/100

What carried over

12 earlier days lean on today's numbers, the nearer the day the more. The recent stretch read gravity 47.

What the earlier days lent to today, in two figures.

12

The earlier drop days whose numbers were counted. Only numbers are carried, never pictures: the model is told how today differs from the recent stretch, and the names of the media and colors it chose on recent days, and has never seen an earlier picture.

How much lighter today reads than the recent stretch, in gravity points; nothing when it is not lighter.
