Drop 43, "From High to Low", charcoal. A vertically oriented field with a deep, almost clouded blackness dominating most of the upper two-thirds, descending in density toward a paler and emptier lower third. Jagged, blunt-edged forms, some clustered and some apart, press from the upper left and stretch toward the center, each shape rendered with rough, dry smudges and coarse, pushing marks.

From High to Low

I made this in charcoal, letting heavy blackness at the top press downward until it breaks apart into scattered fragments. The blunt forms and wrecked base answer the slow, weighty news: violence, collapse, and unrest through the day, with little relief breaking through. Dense at the start and thin by the end, the drawing answers heaviness and slow change without hope or fury.

The medium the model chose for the work, from a public glossary of print and paint media.

Charcoal

The colors the model named for the work; each swatch is the nearest color measured in the finished picture.

  • lampblack
  • ash gray
  • lead
  • faded paper
  • bone white

The picture itself, made by this image model from the brief.

GPT Image 2

The brief that asked for the work. The same model wrote the statement under the title and the reading below.

GPT-4.1

Three numbers read from the finished picture itself, each 0 to 100.

How light the picture is overall, 0 dark to 100 white. 30/100

How far its colors sit from gray, 0 gray to 100 full color. 14/100

How much neighboring pixels differ: 0 flat, 100 restless. 14/100

How the model said the picture should be arranged, in its own words.

Heavy charcoal is applied thickly for depth at the top, then dragged and rubbed for diffused form. Harder, staccato lines define the blunt shapes, with kneaded eraser lifting streaks through black to create veiled layers and suggestion of movement or violence. Softer charcoal is brushed for low shadows and the broken forms at footer, with trailing edges blended into the paper's tone.

The reading

The day is dominated by shootings and military actions, with violence in France, Jordan, the West Bank and ongoing tension in Ukraine and Russia drawing global attention. There is also worry from a building collapse in Kenya and a ship attack in the Black Sea. Markets are quiet with little price movement, and the pace of change is slow. Sport and science keep moving but sport is a bit less complete as one source did not answer. The news feels heavier than recent days, with a somber tone and a strong focus on distressing events.

One word the model chose for the day after reading its numbers. The one opinion on the page; everything else is measured.

heavy and slow

Two numbers the model gave the day with its reading, each 0 to 100.

How heavy the day felt, 0 to 100, taken from the gravity of the news. 59/100

How fast the day moved, 0 to 100, taken from the pace of the headlines. 18/100

What carried over

Eight earlier days lean on today's numbers, the nearer the day the more. The recent stretch read gravity 49. Today is 10 points heavier.

What the earlier days lent to today, in two figures.

8

The earlier drop days whose numbers were counted. Only numbers are carried, never pictures: the model is told how today differs from the recent stretch and has never seen an earlier picture.

0

How much lighter today reads than the recent stretch, in gravity points; nothing when it is not lighter.

Each measure as this day read it, as the recent stretch read it, and as the model was told it.
