Drop 52, "Bruised Lattice", risograph. A vertical portrait composition structured as a loosely woven lattice. Wide, grainy beams cut diagonally and horizontally across the sheet, intersecting with large voids between. In and among these bands, dispersed masses cluster in tight knots then thin out, with no area fully stable or empty.

Bruised Lattice

I made a fractured grid mottled by suspended knots and rough blocks, using overlapping risograph colors. Unrest, scattered violence and disconnected threads of grief suggested a composition where strands cross and strain but never quite connect, with concentrated incidents trapped but never resolved inside the larger, drifting pattern.

Timed edition. Closes in 21 h 11 min.

The medium the model chose for the work, from a public glossary of print and paint media.

Risograph

The colors the model named for the work; each swatch is the nearest color measured in the finished picture.

  • Gunmetal Gray
  • Dull Red
  • Damp Violet
  • Steel Blue

GPT-4.1

Three numbers read from the finished picture itself, each 0 to 100.

How light the picture is overall, 0 dark to 100 white. 72/100

How far its colors sit from gray, 0 gray to 100 full color. 13/100

How much neighboring pixels differ: 0 flat, 100 restless. 16/100

How the model said the picture should be arranged, in its own words.

How the model said the medium should be handled.

Each color is printed in a separate translucent layer, intentionally misregistered to give slight overlap and jittered edges at crossings. Bands and shapes are flat, leaving rough, unfilled edges where screens do not meet. The grain varies in each color, with speckles denser in gray and green.

The reading

The day is dominated by political unrest, with violent Gen Z protests in Germany and a serious attack on a protester in France both drawing significant attention. The news feels heavy, marked by reports of loss, such as the death of a young European athlete and a shooting outside a major sports event. While culture and entertainment provide some distraction, the pace is slow and the tone subdued, with none of the day's themes offering real relief. Sports news is a little less complete, as one major source did not answer. The planet remains unsettled, with notable earthquakes and storms, adding to the underlying tension. Overall, the news is diffuse but weighted by violence and grief.

The model's own words after the reading: what made the day heavy or light, the one thing worth learning from it or doing about it, drawn from the day's themes and nothing else.

This is a heavy day, shaped by violence, tragedy and restlessness both in the news and in the world itself. The headlines do not shy from what is difficult, and the slow pace only makes the weight linger. What stands out is how quickly unrest can escalate, and how political and social divides can turn to harm. The one thing to take from today is the need to pay close attention to brewing tensions before they reach a breaking point; readiness to listen and act early matters most now. Let us not turn away from hard days, but use them to rethink how we respond before violence takes over.

One word the model chose for the day after reading its numbers. The one opinion on the page; everything else is measured.

tense and subdued

Two numbers the model gave the day with its reading, each 0 to 100.

How heavy the day felt, 0 to 100, taken from the gravity of the news. 47/100

How fast the day moved, 0 to 100, taken from the pace of the headlines. 16/100

What carried over

14 earlier days lean on today's numbers, the nearer the day the more. The recent stretch read gravity 45.

What the earlier days lent to today, in two figures.

14

The earlier drop days whose numbers were counted. Only numbers are carried, never pictures: the model is told how today differs from the recent stretch, and the names of the media and colors it chose on recent days, and has never seen an earlier picture.

0

How much lighter today reads than the recent stretch, in gravity points; nothing when it is not lighter.

Each measure as this day read it, as the recent stretch read it, and as the model was told it.
