In Many Directions

I made an etching of broken lines and tangled bands, scattered and layered to echo the sheer spread of today's events without a center. The dark weight below and pale fragments above answer the day's many stories, unified only by heaviness and distraction, while the crosshatched shadows and gaps among forms show the slow pace and wandering focus that marked the news.

Three numbers read from the finished picture itself, each 0 to 100.

How light the picture is overall, 0 dark to 100 white. 52/100

How far its colors sit from gray, 0 gray to 100 full color. 18/100

How much neighboring pixels differ: 0 flat, 100 restless. 9/100

How the model said the picture should be arranged, in its own words.

How the model said the medium should be handled.

All lines, shading, and forms are created with tone and line through etching. Fine needles are used for the lighter, scattered blocks; heavier crosshatching and drypoint yield the denser lower field. The plate is inked in Lamp Black, then selectively wiped to produce both shaded and sharp edges.

The reading

The day is marked by a wide spread of world news, with stories ranging from political maneuvers and major court decisions to a historic homecoming after decades and both violence and innovation reported from several regions. The headlines are numerous and diverse, but no single story dominates, and the overall tone trends negative, driven by reports of violence, cyberattacks and legal troubles. The news feels heavy, though not overwhelmingly so, with steady reports of conflict and disaster balanced by cultural highlights and achievements in sport and science. Activity is high but the pace of change is slow, and attention wanders far from the main news, suggesting distraction or fatigue.

The model's own words after the reading: what made the day heavy or light, the one thing worth learning from it or doing about it, drawn from the day's themes and nothing else.

This is a day that feels burdened by the weight of violence, legal struggles and persistent global conflict, with little relief from positive stories. The slow pace and negative tone make it hard to shake off the heaviness, and the sheer variety of news offers no single point of focus. The lesson is that on days like this, when the world feels overwhelming and scattered, it is crucial to recognize how easily attention can drift; this is a time to be deliberate about where we look and why.

One word the model chose for the day after reading its numbers. The one opinion on the page; everything else is measured.

heavy and diffuse

Two numbers the model gave the day with its reading, each 0 to 100.

How heavy the day felt, 0 to 100, taken from the gravity of the news. 53/100

How fast the day moved, 0 to 100, taken from the pace of the headlines. 17/100

What carried over

14 earlier days lean on today's numbers, the nearer the day the more. The recent stretch read gravity 46.

What the earlier days lent to today, in two figures.

14

The earlier drop days whose numbers were counted. Only numbers are carried, never pictures: the model is told how today differs from the recent stretch, and the names of the media and colors it chose on recent days, and has never seen an earlier picture.

0

How much lighter today reads than the recent stretch, in gravity points; nothing when it is not lighter.
